In Escuintla, Guatemala, the UNICEF team tested drone prototypes designed to enhance disaster relief efforts, particularly during the rainy season when mudslides frequently disrupt communities. These drones will scan affected areas to assess topography, identify barriers to ground transportation, and provide real-time data to mission control, enabling efficient resource allocation and immediate response. Partnering with local authorities, UNICEF aims to leverage drone technology to improve emergency preparedness and deliver life-saving supplies in hard-to-reach regions. This initiative is part of UNICEF’s broader program to explore drone applications, including vaccine delivery, improved connectivity, and aerial imaging, to overcome geographic challenges and advance the rights of children in vulnerable communities.
